Field Closure Information

Check MSC Hotline (201-280-1494)
Ridgewood Park & Rec Hotline (201-670-5565 option #6)

Occasionally weather conditions deteriorate after the Parks Department has made the decision to leave the fields open. If a field closure announcement has not been made coaches should use their own discretion about fields for any practice. If the coach feels a field is unsafe, or that practicing on it will cause significant damage to the field, they should cancel their practice or training session. If a coach decides to cancel a training session the coach should not dismiss the trainer without alerting the coaches who follow them to confirm that they too are canceling for the day.

Lightning Policy

A lightning detection system is in place at the following fields: Veterans Field (bandshell), Maple Park, BF Middle School, RHS, Somerville and Hawes Elementary (scoreboards). The system is able to detect presence of lightning within a 20 mile radius from Ridgewood. When lightning is detected, a horn will sound for 15 seconds, and a yellow light will activate/flash. Upon hearing this signal, all activities on the field must cease, and coaches and players are to find SAFE shelter. Activities can not resume until an “all clear” signal is given, at which time the horn will sound (3 short 3 second alerts) and the light will go off.

On all other fields, coaches and trainers are to use the “30-minute rule” regarding lightning and thunder. This means activities stop and SAFE shelter is found upon first audible detection of thunder/visible detection of lightning. Activities can not restart until 30 minutes following – this time period restarts from zero if another audible/visible sign of thunder/lightning is detected within the initial 30 min period.

SEEK: automobiles/trucks, large buildings, tunnels with no standing water.

AVOID: tall trees, open fields, metal fencing, overhead wires and power lines, light towers, high ground areas, umbrellas, small unprotected shelters, phones and cell phones, radios and PA systems.
